A Nation's Finest Hour

Throughout the Second World War, Great Britain faced the ultimate threat of invasion, and for a time, stood alone, as mainland Europe fell to Adolf Hitler's advancing Nazi bid for world domination. Yet a war-time-spirit grew as the British people experienced the Blackout, the Blitz and Rationing, whilst being encouraged to "dig for victory", "fight on the beaches", and "never surrender", waste nothing and learn to cook with dried egg.
This programme is a celebration of that Island dweller's resolve that refused to be quashed and contributed significantly to the restoration of peace on a worldwide scale. Follow the progress of the war from the first skirmishes through to the major battles, and with the help of archive footage enjoy a rare glimpse of the British nation at war.
