This screenplay (written by John Krizanc) is based on the book Unauthorized Action by Brian Villa. It chronicles the infamous Dieppe invasion in 1942 during W.W. II which resulted in half the Canadian troops either dead or captured. Detailing the planning and political machinations of the invasion, the mini-series depicts both the real-life personalities of the generals and commanders and a collection of fictional soldiers, fronted by Aidan Devine, whom the story follows. Directed by John N. Smith, this expensive docu-drama reportedly ignited strong emotions from veterans. Nonetheless, it suffers from flat direction, trite characterization and, most surprisingly, ineffective performances despite an impressive cast (Victor Garber, John Neville and Gary Reineke). It almost seems to be counting on the belief that the earnest subject matter will make people forgive its rather pedestrian presentation. --D.K. Latta
