Set in England in the 1860s when British naval strength was the envy of Europe, this saga charts the fortunes of an ambitious, clever and determined ship owner whose private life is more tempestuous than the seas he sails.

James Onedin (Peter Gilmore) is a young sea captain who has recently launched his own shipping line. Marrying a woman he barely knew to acquire his first ship, Onedin must fight for survival in the highly competitive shipping industry. His archrival and former employer, Callon, attempts to block Onedin at every turn.

Onedin is ruthless, but he knows that the advent of steam will propel the shipping industry to new levels. However, will Onedin be able to make his dreams come true?
