When a bolt of lightening destroys his boat and his livelihood, former lawyer turned happy fisherman Steve Myers (Billy Connolly - Mrs. Brown, Fido) is not too worried - after all, he's covered by insurance. The insurance company doesn't have to pay him a dime! Why? - because the lightning was an "act of God" - the perfect legal loophole. Infuriated with the injustice, Steve decides to fight for his rights with an inspired notion. If God is responsible for the loss of his boat, than God can pay for it!
Faced with the daunting task of preparing a legal case against God, Steve teams up with reporter Anna Redmond (Judy Davis - The Break-Up) and together they challenge the ominous insurance companies, the media and the Churches in a humorous tale of the audacious little underdog going head to head against the invincible powers that be.
